December 31, 1866
Emma went to her school on foot, then Father took sled and oxen, shovel and helped broke thru.  Girls rode home up on sled.  Em staid at Mr. E. W. Shepards.  3 years today since Hattie died.  I have been thinking much about it.

Additional writing in the back of the diary:
And now another year of our lives is gone.  One less to live on the earth, one more added to our account with God.  Many have gone but we are left.  How much longer we know not, but if only spent rightly and to the best of our abilities, all is well.

March 27 Mr. George Burdick went to his woods alone to chop.  Not coming in to dinner, his wife became alarmed.  Search was made.  When he was found caught between two trees.  On further examination it appears a limb had broken his skull which probably killed him instantly.

April 3, a child of Mr. Wm Gordon drowned, age 4 yrs

April 16, old John Culver died suddenly

May 29 Curtis Black died at (?) aged 31 years.  Was brought to Blandford and buried.

Mr. Osborn folks broke road.  Dreadful deep.

Has kept snowing and blowing so there is no getting to school or any where else.  Emma cut and the girls helped and made my new Laine dress.

December 27, 1866
Snowing real hard.  Kept snowing fast all day.  Father took oxen and sled to get them to and from school.  Wet snow.

(Em has got a very hard cold)
Froze hard.

December 25, 1866
Pleasant today.  Froze a little.  Dried clothes.  Em has got a very hard cold.

December 24, 1866
Rainy.  Em and Bell went up at 10 to help fix the church, then home, then all went up in evening.  Come home with presents.  House (?) looked (or cooked) nicely.

December 23, 1866
Rainy.  Bess and I here.  Chimney got on fire.  Billy brought Em and Bell home.  They all went up in eve.

December 22, 1866
Lissa, Bessie and Abbie went up to Mrs. Leets to (?) preparing.  They have (?) two dolls here.  I finished mittens.

December 21, 1866
Bessie 14 today.  Em and Bell staid up til 10 at night fixing things at Mrs. Leets for Christmas.
