Emma went to her school on foot, then Father took sled and oxen, shovel and helped broke thru. Girls rode home up on sled. Em staid at Mr. E. W. Shepards. 3 years today since Hattie died. I have been thinking much about it. Additional writing in the back of the diary: And now another year of our lives is gone. One less to live on the earth, one more added to our account with God. Many have gone but we are left. How much longer we know not, but if only spent rightly and to the best of our abilities, all is well. March 27 Mr. George Burdick went to his woods alone to chop. Not coming in to dinner, his wife became alarmed. Search was made. When he was found caught between two trees. On further examination it appears a limb had broken his skull which probably killed him instantly. April 3, a child of Mr. Wm Gordon drowned, age 4 yrs April 16, old John Culver died suddenly May 29 Curtis Black died at (?) aged 31 years. Was brought to Blandford and buried. Sam Moore Sept 22 ? Died Feb 20 aged 45 Mrs. Eli Shepard died March 3 A child ? To Jeff More 27 Mr. George Bush .. 58 April 15 Dea Wm ? Old Mr. John Culver, 16 April 3 a child of Wm Jordan Mr. Eli Hayden June 19 aged 56 Rufus Hunt July 10 aged 24
